NWT Fire is advising residents in Fort Providence that it is planning a prescribed burn at a wildfire experimental site outside the community.
In a notice, the territory’s wildfire agency said if conditions allow, the burn will take place on Thursday night and could cause visible smoke in the area.
The experimental site is located approximately 40km north of Fort Providence. NWT Fire said the site is prepared to safely hold prescribed burns and fire breaks, fire crews, air support and sprinklers are in place to effectively manage the fire.
The NWT government, which is leading research at the site, said the prescribed fire will help inform FireSmart work in the territory and nationally. It said the fire will test the resilience of different building materials and treatments to wildfire as well as the effectiveness of sprinklers under severe wildfire conditions.
