Inuvik to hold town hall meeting after shooting tragedy

Mackenzie Road in Inuvik. Emily Blake/Cabin Radio

The Town of Inuvik says a public meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 22 as residents grieve the “tragic loss of life” that followed a shooting earlier this week.

A male victim, whose identity has not been made public, passed away at Inuvik’s hospital after shots were fired on Monday morning.

An Alberta 25-year-old was subsequently charged with murder.

In a late Friday statement, the town said the incident had “brought renewed attention to the serious harm the illegal drug trade continues to cause in Inuvik.”

The coming town hall, at the Midnight Sun Complex from 6-9pm on September 22, will be the first in “a number of planned community events and public information posts focused on illegal drugs, community safety, available supports and the work being done locally,” the town stated.

The town said the meeting forms part of a joint response based on discussions with RCMP, various levels of government and community groups following the loss of life.
