Naka Power says it is still trying to understand the cause of an outage that began in Wekweètì on Monday, though a technician is on the way to resolve the issue.

A spokesperson from Naka Power said manager Vic Barr contacted the community’s senior administrator shortly after the outage was reported at 5:30pm on Monday.

“Unfortunately, we need to get into the community in order to know more about the cause and when we’ll be able to restore power,” the company told Cabin Radio in an email.

“The cause of the outage is unknown at this time, and we can provide more details at a later time.”

A technician is expected to arrive in Wekweètì by air shortly before 4pm to assess its diesel power station. Until then, Naka Power said it has no timeframe for restoration.

The community is hosting the 20th Tłı̨chǫ Annual Gathering at the Alexis Arrowmaker School this week. Whether the outage has any connection to the volume of people attending the event was unclear.

Wekweètì’s health centre temporarily closed on Tuesday because of the outage.

“Health centre is closed until further notice. By law, we must stay closed until we have power and running water. We will only accept true emergencies,” a sign outside the facility read.
