Drivers reported treacherous, icy conditions along Highway 1 above the Alberta border on Friday. Snow ahead could make things worse.

RCMP, in a Facebook post, told people to “avoid unnecessary travel” between the border and Enterprise because “rain combined with freezing temperatures have created extremely icy conditions.”

“One motor vehicle collision has already been reported on the highway requiring police response,” RCMP added.

Robyn Scott, who drove through the area earlier on Friday, said the road was “absolute glass” on the NWT side of the border.

“I’ve come across two vehicles in the ditch so far waiting for emergency vehicles to come get them. I slid off the road but was able to get myself out,” Scott said.

“I am now driving toward Enterprise at 40 km/h and I’m considering stopping for the night. Unless folks have studded tires, I strongly recommend staying off the highway.”

Weather conditions are expected to deteriorate later on Friday evening.

“Snow squalls are expected to develop tonight and continue into Saturday morning, mainly west of Hay River,” Environment Canada reported at 3pm on Friday.

“Under the snow squall bands, visibilities may be significantly reduced due to the heavy snow along parts of the Mackenzie Highway. Snow will quickly accumulate under these bands.

“Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.”

Conditions are expected to improve by Saturday evening, Environment Canada said.
