The NWT government says it is donating $150,000 to Norman Wells’ food bank to support residents as they face rising costs.
In a statement, Premier RJ Simpson said the donation reflects the territorial government’s “continued dedication to providing essential relief to families during this challenging time.” He added the territory is working on both immediate relief and long-term solutions for the region.
Residents in Norman Wells have complained of skyrocketing fuel prices since resupply barges to the Sahtu community were cancelled this past summer. That prompted municipal officials to declare a humanitarian local state of emergency earlier this month and ask for territorial and federal help.
Last week, the territorial government announced it planned to nearly double a seniors’ home heating subsidy for eligible residents in Norman Wells.
Finance minister Caroline Wawzonek has called on Imperial Oil – which runs an oil field in Norman Wells and supplies the community’s fuel – to “step up” and support residents.
Territorial ministers said they are continuing to working with Imperial Oil, local contractors, Indigenous governments and the federal government to “stabilize prices and provide further relief” to the community.
“The community of Norman Wells has shown incredible resilience in the face of rising costs and supply chain disruptions,” Vince McKay, the communities minister, said in a statement.
“We will continue to monitor this situation closely and adjust our efforts to ensure families receive immediate relief and access to essential services.”
