A program that provides training to people with “no previous experience” in the film and television industry has launched in Canada’s three territories.

The NWT Media Producers Association, a non-profit representing the territory’s media professionals, says it has collaborated with the NWT Film Commission to begin the Northern Canada Producer Launcher.

A Thursday news release said a successful 2022 program with a similar title, the Northern Canadian Producer Accelerator, had focused on “boosting careers” of professionals in the field and inspired the latest initiative.

Residents can now submit applications for the new program, known as NCPL. Classes begin in February.

The program, which will be run by media group Access Canada, will help 10 selected applicants to pursue a career in TV and film production.

With help from industry experts, the program promises to offer “access, training, community building, digital and in-person curriculum components.” Travel costs are covered and money is provided for participants to incorporate their own businesses.

“Our goal is to help grow the film and media sector of the NWT. We’re excited to support content creators in the territory with producing authentic northern stories,” said NWT Media Producers Association member Jen Walden.

Residents of the NWT, Yukon and Nunavut are eligible. They will be helped to develop ideas that can be “pitched, sold, and ultimately produced at a professional level,” the association said.

Funding for the program came from the Bell Fund, Canada Media Fund, CanNor and the NWT Film Commission.
