Yellowknife seniors’ accommodation and services group Avens has launched a fundraiser seeking $800,000, in part to outfit a new 102-unit building with “enhanced” activity spaces.

The fundraising initiative is named Home for Seniors – Choice Matters.

“The funds raised through this initiative will enhance various activity rooms that promote physical health, mental well-being and social engagement while enriching the lives of our residents and fostering a vibrant community,” Avens said in a press release.

In a separate document setting out its goals in more detail, Avens added it had “done its best, within our budget, to fill these diverse activity rooms with basic fixtures and furniture. However, we are asking you to help us ‘enhance’ these rooms to make them more versatile.”

The campaign also offers donors the chance to name “specific areas” within the new Aven Pavilion development, which has begun welcoming its first residents.

Naming the entire building, for example, is available for $250,000. Naming one of the four wings costs $50,000. A $25,000 donation comes with the right to name a family dining room.

Some funds raised are expected to be used to establish a reserve, managed as a trust, for Aven Pavilion’s “perpetual upkeep.”

Avens said the fundraising total had already reached $280,000 as of late last week, partly as a result of a $65,000 donation from the Eggenberger family. The organization hopes to hit its target by November 2025.

Jennifer Eggenberger, on behalf of the family, called Aven Pavilion “a worthy cause that will have a lasting impact on our community.”

More information about donating is available on Avens’ website.

“Your support will empower us to create vibrant spaces for new and exciting activities, ensuring that seniors have the freedom to choose experiences that bring them joy and fulfillment,” Avens said.
