Two Yellowknife students have been selected as Loran Scholars, a designation billed as being worth more than $100,000 in support over four years of post-secondary education.

The Loran Scholars Foundation said Audrey Debogorski and Stella Fairman, from St Patrick’s High School, were among 36 recipients chosen from more than 6,000 applicants.

To identify winners, the foundation said, “we look beyond marks to identify students with a guiding sense of purpose and a commitment to giving back.”

The foundation had previously said winners receive a “four-year leadership enrichment program including summer work experiences, one-on-one mentorship, scholar gatherings, an annual living stipend, a tuition waiver at one of 25 university partners, and a long-term community of peers, alumni, and supporters from coast to coast to coast.”

Commenting on Debogorski’s selection, the foundation said she had followed a passion for dancing for more than a decade, had been co-president of her school’s social justice club and co-chaired a cancer research fundraiser.

Fairman had served her community as president of Students Against Drinking and Driving at her school, volunteering locally and herself organizing cancer fundraisers, the foundation added.

Previous winners from the NWT include Yellowknife’s Emma Willoughby in 2019 and Adithi Balaji in 2020, as well as Inuvik’s Kyran Alikamik in 2021. Yellowknife’s Kira Young received one of last year’s scholarships.
