Ecology North has released the schedule for 2025’s Earth Week in Yellowknife. Make your own butter, turn mason jars into art, watch movies like Wall-E and more.

From April 22 to May 3 – which, granted, is more than a week – events will take place throughout the city to “welcome the spring and celebrate our relationships with one another, ourselves, and the land,” the NWT environmental non-profit said.

Earth Week begins with a medicine walk on April 22 and concludes with a feeding-the-fire ceremony on May 3.

Other events include a community litter pick-up, a movie night, DIY workshops and a bike tune-up. Here are some highlights we picked out:

Wednesday, April 23
6-7pm: A community litter pick-up at Somba K’e Civic Plaza. They provide the bags and gloves. “Bring cash or e-transfer as Girl Guide cookies will be available for purchase,” the schedule states.

With Food Rescue, learn how to make our own butter, including flavours like apple and maple. “All materials are provided, though we encourage you to bring cream nearing its expiry date and extra flavouring you want to use up.” (There’s also a bike tune-up at Makerspace YK from 6pm.)

Saturday, April 26
2-3:30pm: Tin Can Hill treasure hunt. “Look for Golden Eggs and help clean up the trails for your chance to win some prizes.”

Monday, April 28
6-8:30pm: Watch either Wall-E or the documentary Choosing Earth at the Capitol Theatre.

Tuesday, April 29
5-6:30pm: Learn to make beeswax food wraps at Makerspace YK. “Reduce your reliance on plastic and upcycle your fabric scraps into reusable beeswax covers to keep your food fresh. Bring your fabric and we’ll provide the wax.”
