Any event titled Enchanted Chocolate Dreams on Ice deserves a second look.

That’s the name of the Yellowknife Skating Club annual show. In two performances at Ed Jeske Arena on Saturday, April 12, club members will reenact a story loosely based on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – on skates.

“You’ll see some Oompa-Loompas and some chocolate bars and some other antics going on,” said Erin Ladouceur, the club’s president.

“The skaters have been working really, really hard over the last couple of weeks to create many different numbers to engage the audience.”

The club’s membership has grown from 231 to 272 skaters from last season to this one.

Ladouceur said the idea for this year’s chocolatey show – based on the Roald Dahl book – came from head coach Brenda Dalton, who pitched it a year ago.

“We were all excited about it. The ability to tell a story on the ice is so engaging for the skaters as well as the audience,” Ladouceur said.

There are two shows, one at 12pm and the other at 6pm. Doors open half an hour before each show’s stated start time.

Tickets cost $10 each for anyone aged 13 or over, $5 for those aged three to 12 and free entry for anyone younger. You can get tickets online or at the door.

“Come to be entertained and bring your family, it’s a family-friendly show,” said Ladouceur – though maybe bring your own chocolate, too, if that’s going to be integral to your enjoyment.

Asked if there would be chocolate supplied, Ladouceur made no promises.

“I’m not entirely sure if there’s chocolate,” she said, “but there may be chocolate props.”
