Are you an NWT youth interested in helping to advance climate action in the territory?
The NWT government is looking for residents aged 18 to 35 to join the NWT Climate Change Youth Council to share their perspectives and provide input on the territory’s response to climate change.
“Young people have the potential to play a vital role in tackling the climate change challenges we face in the Northwest Territories,” environment minister Jay Macdonald stated.
“Their energy, creativity and enthusiasm can inspire meaningful action and spark innovative solutions. The NWT Climate Change Youth Council gives young northerners an important opportunity to share their voices and help shape the future of our territory.”

The NWT government said other benefits of joining the council include learning about policymaking and climate initiatives, developing leadership and advocacy skills, and connecting with environmental advocates and leaders. Members of the council receive an honorarium of $200 to $350 per day.
Members of the council serve for two years. They are required to attend three meetings a year, including one in-person meeting, and engage with community members on climate change.
The NWT government is encouraging youth from across the territory to apply regardless of their experience.
“Diverse voices and perspectives are key to building strong, inclusive climate solutions for the territory,” a press release states.
The youth council was established as a panel of the NWT Climate Change Council in March 2023 and has 12 members. This will be the council’s second cohort.
The deadline to apply is May 28.
