Yellowknife’s Bottle Shop recycling depot is beginning another summer of pop-up recycling in the city’s downtown Somba K’e Park.

Starting on May 28, the pop-up option will be available from 12-7pm each Wednesday until at least September 10.

Jane Ann Swim, the Bottle Shop’s new owner, said the pop-up station is designed to help people recycle their bottles and electronic household waste if they can’t get out to the Old Airport Road depot. The same service was offered last year.

“Maybe it’s the transportation issue, maybe they don’t have enough time. Pop in during your lunchtime, sneak out of work in the afternoon, go home after work and see us,” said Swim.

“Right now, we’re committed to doing this right through till September 10. After that, we’d love to go to the end of September. We’re just going to have to play it by Mother Nature’s ears.”

Swim eventually hopes to have pop-up locations “following events that are happening around town.”

“I was at the [city’s indoor] garage sale this weekend accepting any electronic waste for people who didn’t sell their items and didn’t feel like taking them home,” she said.

“Those types of things, you’ll see more and more in our community. Whenever there’s a grouping where there’s a Bottle Shop service we can provide, I’m going to try to facilitate that so people can get two birds with one stone.”
