Break-Away Drilling & Blasting confirmed it was behind the boom that reverberated through Yellowknife on Thursday afternoon at around 1pm.
The company told Cabin Radio the blast originated from a quarry at around kilometre 330 along Highway 3, just a few minutes outside the city.
“[It’s] the last one for a while, I believe,” said Roger Mann, a spokesperson for the company.
Residents had reported multiple such blasts in recent days. Blasting, in general, is a fairly common occurrence in and around the city, though residents receive more warning about some blasts than others.
“There’s three quarries right there, side by side, so it’ll be happening for years to come,” Mann noted.

Mann said a blasting notification had been sent to key contacts, such as the RCMP and City of Yellowknife, ahead of this week’s work.
