Inuvik residents received separate warnings on Monday that healthcare services will be reduced for the coming week – and to watch out for grizzly bears.
The operating room serving the Beaufort Delta town of about 3,000 people will be closed until Monday, June 30, the NWT’s health authority stated.
That closure also affects the town hospital’s ability to carry out C-sections. Residents who end up with “other unplanned operating room needs” may be given a medevac south for treatment. More details are available in the health authority’s advisory.
Meanwhile, after Inuvik’s Midnight Sun Fun Run was rerouted because of the danger posed by “aggressive bears” on the road outside the town, the territory’s Department of Environment and Climate Change said three grizzlies have now been killed by wildlife officers in the past few days.
“ECC reminds Inuvik residents to report all bear sightings promptly by calling 867-678-0289, so the on-call officer can respond quickly,” the department stated.
“Please remember that we live in grizzly bear country – everyone must do their part to keep the community clean and free of attractants to reduce bear encounters.”
