Toronto-based soul musician Jeremie Albino is set to share his old-timey tunes with the Northwest Territories next month at Folk On The Rocks.
Albino – pronounced Al-been-o – started his musical journey young.
“My parents, whenever there’d be a get-together, would say, ‘Jeremie, sing a song for your aunties and uncles and your cousins’ and all that,” he told Cabin Radio.
Albino graduated to busking on the Lake Ontario boardwalk, playing open mics, and eventually releasing three full-length albums.
Pick a song from Albino’s discography. A country road appears. Tumbleweed blows through the dust. “This town ain’t big enough for the both of us,” a moustache drawls.
“I lean into different genres,” Albino said. “Folk, songwriter, heavier rock, blues, country and soul.”
His instrumentals brim with acoustic and electric guitar sounds, upbeat riffs, tambourine, horns and keys. His dynamic voice hits highs and lows, and it’s mellow, yet strong.
Our Time In The Sun, Albino’s third album, was released late last year. Albino partnered with Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys in Nashville to produce what Albino said is the album he’s always wanted to make.
The title track is Albino’s favourite, and his influences are vintage.
“There’s a song called Wish Someone Would Care by Irma Thomas. Her version is really simple. It doesn’t take a lot of storytelling. With my song, Our Time In The Sun, I was trying to emulate a lot of these old soul songs where it’s a heartache,” he said.
Although Albino is an old soul, his sensibilities keep his music modern.
“I end up writing songs that I want to write, and some of them are simpler and hit that throwback sound,” he said.
“But it’s just natural that they’ll be relevant. Music is just music. And you can dial it into older sounds, but it’ll always be connected to where we are.”
Spend some time in the sun with Jeremie Albino and his guitar at Folk on the Rocks’ Lawson Lundell Main Stage on Sunday, July 20 from 10-10:45pm.
Cabin Radio will carry 30 hours of live music from Folk on the Rocks 2025. Listen live via the Cabin Radio website or get the app. Tickets for the festival are on sale here.
