Folk on the Rocks organizers are asking Yellowknifers to come out in big numbers this weekend after a storm forced a financially damaging abandonment of Warm the Rocks on Friday night.
Folk’s artistic director, Carly McFadden, said having to close down the site at 8:30pm – with six hours of scheduled performances still to go – “will be a devastating financial loss.”
Some of that loss may involve refunds. McFadden said late on Friday evening she did not yet know “exactly what our ticketing plan is” but would update customers in the near future.
A major part of the financial problem is lost sales of drinks. Warm the Rocks takes place in Folk’s beer garden and runs well into the small hours of Saturday morning. That large revenue stream was cut off extremely early in the evening.
“Sales is a big one for us this evening. It’s a big night for us sales-wise,” McFadden said.

Now, she said, Yellowknifers coming out in large numbers on Saturday and Sunday “could make a huge, huge difference” to the festival’s future.
“Come out, buy merch, buy raffle tickets, have a beer or non-alcoholic beverage,” she said.
“Without folks coming out, it will impact next year and years to come greatly.”
