Houcine Berdouz says he formally became the new owner of Yellowknife’s downtown Your Independent Grocer on Sunday.
Berdouz, who had worked as an assistant manager at the city’s uptown Independent since 2022, said the process of taking over the downtown store began in May.
Yellowknife has two Independents: the downtown one, just off 50 Avenue, and the uptown one on Old Airport Road.
The downtown store is now known as Houcine’s Your Independent Grocer. The larger uptown store became Inder’s Independent earlier this year after Inderjit Singh and Khushboo Mahajan switched from the downtown Independent to the Old Airport Road store.
“After three years of serving the community at the uptown Independent, I’m excited to continue doing so downtown,” Berdouz told Cabin Radio.

“Now that all the paperwork is complete, everything is officially set. I’m looking forward to meeting and serving my new downtown customers.”
