YWCA urges NWT residents to sponsor a family for Christmas
YWCA NWT on Monday launched a Christmas family sponsorship program, asking the territory’s companies and communities to “support a local family in need.”
Money raised through the program will provide a “high-priority family” with Christmas gifts and food for a holiday meal, the YWCA said in a news release.
“The holidays are a very stressful time for low-income families and buying presents is just not an option for many of our clients,” said Lyda Fuller, the group’s executive director.
“Parents must often choose basic necessities over buying gifts for their children or having a special meal over the holidays.
“Our annual gift and grocery drive helps show families they are supported and alleviates some of that financial burden. We couldn’t do it without the amazing support of our local community.”

This year’s campaign is accompanied by a “gift guidelines” document setting out how people can help, and what they can expect their money to buy.
The YWCA recommends donors budget about $100 per child for Christmas gifts, and $50 per family member for a grocery gift card (including parents – the YWCA works with both single parents and couples).
“Let us know your budget and we’ll do our best to match you, your workplace, or your organization with the right family,” the gift guidelines state.
Families with up to six children are in need of sponsorship. To get started, email the YWCA with the size of family you would like to sponsor.
The YWCA asks anyone interested in helping to get in touch by December 6.
