The Native Women’s Association of the NWT is holding a Saturday vigil in Yellowknife on the National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQI+ People.
The association said a Sisters in Spirit ceremony and candlelight vigil will begin at 4pm at its offices, 5114 49 Street, and run until 6pm.
An opening prayer will be delivered by Liza Pieper, William Greenland will play the flute, and the speaker is Kathy Paul-Drover.
Refreshments, pizza and door prizes will be available.
Similar vigils are held annually across Canada each October 4 to remember and honour Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit people who have disappeared or been killed.
On October 4, 2023, a monument honouring missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls was unveiled outside the territory’s legislature.
