Viewing platforms at two NWT waterfalls that form tourist attractions south of Hay River have been blocked off because of erosion. When they will reopen isn’t clear.
On Wednesday, the territory’s Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment confirmed that one viewing platform at Alexandra Falls and two at Louise Falls are now closed.
Two of those – one at Alexandra Falls and one at Louise Falls – have been out of service for some time. The second Louise Falls platform closed last week “after further assessment of site conditions,” the department stated by email.

“Erosion is the main concern at these sites, and wildfire impacts have contributed to the instability of the surrounding terrain,” that statement read.
Fire burned through the area in 2023 and, to an extent, in 2024.
The viewing platforms extend from the cliff on the western side of the Hay River and are connected by a trail.
The department said there is “no set timeline” for the platforms to reopen.
“The closures will remain in place until a full damage assessment can be completed and the areas are determined to be safe for public use,” ITI stated.
“While no remedial work has yet been scheduled, planning is under way to reinforce and, where necessary, relocate infrastructure along the trail to ensure long-term safety and sustainability.”
