Former Yellowknife city manager Sheila Bassi-Kellett is becoming the NWT’s equal pay commissioner on an acting basis.
Bassi-Kellett was the city’s senior staff member from 2017 to 2024.
The equal pay commissioner is “responsible for ensuring that the right to equal pay for work of equal value in the Public Service Act is protected,” the territory’s legislature said in a press release.
The role has existed since 2004. Of late, the office has reported relatively few concerns and the NWT has recorded one of the smallest gaps in pay, based on gender, of any jurisdiction in Canada (though a gap persists).
Bassi-Kellett replaces Renée Caron, a recognized pay equity expert who had held the role since 2023 but is departing this month. Caron’s last day is Monday and Bassi-Kellett starts on Tuesday.
“The Legislative Assembly expresses deep gratitude for Ms Caron’s dedicated service and contributions during her tenure and welcomes Ms Bassi-Kellett to the role,” the legislature stated.
