Tests at Fort Good Hope’s Chief T’Selehye School have revealed that “several drinking water fixtures show lead levels above the maximum acceptable concentration.”

Multiple schools in Yellowknife and Dettah have already failed similar tests. The NWT government is carrying out a territory-wide assessment of all schools as a result.

“Test results indicate that the elevated levels are associated with fixtures within the school rather than the community water supply,” the GNWT stated on Wednesday evening.

The drinking water fixtures will remain in use but “with a flushing protocol in place,” the GNWT stated.

“Chief T’Selehye School is required to flush all affected fixtures for three minutes each morning before use. All sinks and fountains remain available and safe to use.”

The territorial government said staff are “working together to identify and implement appropriate mitigation measures.”
