The Yellowknife Guild of Arts and Crafts is celebrating 80 years in the North.
“I think the guild has endured because it has always provided such a unique place for the community of Yellowknife to gather, learn and be in an atmosphere that fosters creativity,” guild chair Georgina Williston stated in a Monday press release.
“It also endures because of many dedicated volunteers, over the years and still, who give generously of their time and expertise to support the day-to-day operations of the guild, teach classes and serve on our board.”
The guild, founded by Ruth Stanton in 1946, is a volunteer-run society dedicated to sharing arts and craft skills in Yellowknife.
It offers year-round programming including workshops and courses at its studio space, public exhibits and events, and arts and craft sales.
The guild said this year’s 80th anniversary celebrations will feature a series of events that take art into the community.
They include a month-long fibre arts exhibit and weekend of art demonstrations each hosted at the Snowkings’ Winter Festival this March, open houses, and a three-month exhibit at the Yellowknife Visitor Centre – beginning in December – that showcases the guild’s history.
Event dates and further information will be posted to the guild’s website.
