The NWT government says health orders at Yellowknife’s William McDonald and NJ Macpherson schools have been lifted as “lead levels in drinking water no longer exceed Health Canada guidelines.”

Those two schools were among the first to report elevated lead levels in their water last year as the GNWT began rolling out a testing process that is now territory-wide in scope.

While tests across the NWT are ongoing, the Office of the Chief Public Health Officer has lifted health orders at William Mac and NJ Macpherson as all affected fixtures have been replaced and “follow-up testing has confirmed overall water quality,” the GNWT stated on Wednesday.

“Standard operating procedures have been developed to support ongoing maintenance – including filter replacement and routine retesting – to ensure the water remains safe over time,” a news release added.
