The NWT’s chief environmental health officer is advising everyone in Sachs Harbour to boil their drinking water for at least one minute.
The territorial government issued the precautionary boil water advisory for the community on Monday afternoon due to “frozen intake and truck-fill pipes following extreme winter conditions.”
The advisory stated the community’s water treatment plant “currently cannot draw water into the plant and therefore cannot treat the water.”
“Manual chlorination is being carried out, and there have been no illnesses associated with drinking water reported in the community,” the advisory continued.
“The community, in collaboration with Maca, is working to resolve the issue as soon as possible.”
The advisory included a series of steps residents should take as precautionary measures.
Sachs Harbour’s local temperature dipped below -40C on Monday afternoon, with a wind chill factor of -56.
The community’s forecast lows are below -40C each day until Friday.
