RCMP say they have arrested a 24-year-old woman in Ulukhaktok after receiving reports of threats “alluding to mass violence.”
According to a Monday press release, police received numerous reports from concerned residents over the weekend alleging that a woman had posted threats on social media “alluding to committing a mass shooting.”
RCMP said they attended the suspect’s home and arrested the woman “without incident.” Police said they did not locate any firearms during a search of the residence.
Police said the woman was released from custody on conditions including a firearms prohibition and a condition not to attend Helen Kalvak School.
RCMP said they were not naming the woman as her charges have not been formally sworn in court.
This is not the first time in recent weeks NWT RCMP have arrested someone following alleged threats on social media.
Last month, Yellowknife RCMP said they arrested a 13-year-old boy and seized an imitation firearm after receiving a report alleging that a photo of an École St Patrick High School student posted online appeared to show them in a home with a firearm.
A few days later, police in Hay River arrested and charged a 15-year-old student at Diamond Jenness Secondary School after investigating a report about a social media post with “a threatening caption relating to an upcoming school sporting event.”
The NWT School Sports Association then said it was increasing security at a basketball tournament in Yellowknife citing “potential safety concerns” at École St Patrick High School and École Sir John Franklin High School.
