The Department of National Defence has finalized details of a public meeting in Yellowknife later this month about coming major spending.
The meeting, and a similar one in Inuvik, had been advertised last month but without a confirmed venue.
This week, DND confirmed the Yellowknife meeting will run from 7-9pm on April 23 at the Explorer Hotel. The Inuvik meeting takes place two days earlier, from 6-8pm on April 21 at the Midnight Sun Complex.
The meetings will “share information and answer questions about infrastructure planned for North American Aerospace Defense Command Modernization and Continental Defence” in each of the communities, DND stated.
Canada has committed to spending billions of dollars on Arctic sovereignty, with procurement notices suggesting Yellowknife and Inuvik can each expect around $5 billion in military investment over the next 15 years.
The precise nature of that investment isn’t yet clear.
Ottawa has described much of the work as involving airfield upgrades, new or repurposed hangars, ammunition and fuel facilities, buildings and equipment for accommodations, and warehousing.
