Five modular duplexes built in Hay River will leave the town next weel by barge bound for Ulukhaktok, Housing NWT says.

In a Friday news release, the territorial government said the buildings – totally 10 housing units – were the first to be shipped as part of a 98-unit project.

Most of the units are being built by Metcan, a partnership between Arcan Construction and the Hay River Métis Government Council.

Lucy Kuptana, Nunakput MLA and NWT housing minister, said the homes were “important” for the Beaufort Delta.

They are scheduled to depart Hay River on July 6 and complete the 2,200-km journey – via Great Slave Lake, the Mackenzie River and the Arctic Ocean – in early August.

There are currently 94 social housing units in Ulukhaktok, which has a population of about 460, Housing NWT said.
