The Northwest Territories’ legislature has begun the search for a new clerk with incumbent Glen Rutland stating he will retire.

The clerk runs the affairs of the territorial legislature, which has about 50 staff and an annual budget of $28 million according to the job ad for Rutland’s successor.

Rutland took over in 2023 from Tim Mercer, who had served as clerk for the prior two decades.

Writing on LinkedIn on Monday afternoon, Rutland said he was looking forward to new opportunities, including a return to the practice of law.

“It is official. I will be retiring as Clerk of the Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly later this year. It is difficult to leave a career and team that you enjoy and are proud of, but I have decided it is time,” Rutland wrote.
