The NWT government has brought back a region-wide fire ban for the entirety of public and private land in the North Slave, other than national parks.
The ban was first introduced in late June then lifted earlier in July before being reinstated on Wednesday. It’ll last until at least the end of Tuesday, July 28.
It covers the communities of Yellowknife, Dettah, Ndılǫ, Wekweètì, Whatì, Behchokǫ̀, Gamètì and Łútsël K’é as well as wilderness areas and territorial parks in the North Slave.
“This is being implemented due to continued extreme fire danger and extraordinary weather conditions to protect communities and protect wildfire fighting resources by limiting avoidable person-caused fires,” the GNWT stated.
The full terms of the ban are set out on the GNWT’s website. In general, it bans open fire outdoors – including in a fire pit or burn barrel. Approved closed stoves, barbecues and furnaces may be used.

The ban applies to the North Slave only. Other regions were not mentioned in a Wednesday news release.
