Six days after allowing residents to return home, the Village of Fort Simpson on Friday afternoon lifted the evacuation alert that had remained in place as a precaution.
An evacuation order in place since late June was lifted on Saturday last week after firefighters gained sufficient ground against wildfire FS016, which had burned up to the village and entered some neighbourhoods.
When residents came home, the village had warned that an evacuation alert would remain active in case the situation deteriorated again.
That alert was set to formally lift at 3pm, the village announced on Friday afternoon.
“Residents and visitors should continue to exercise caution when travelling or recreating near the fire area, as wildfire-related hazards may still exist, including fire-weakened trees, ash pits, and active suppression operations,” the village stated.
