The Town of Inuvik is holding an August 10 public hearing to consider renaming Bompas Street and consolidating two Carmichael Drives into one.
The hearing is to gather feedback, the town said in a Monday notice.
The latest hearing considers a proposal to rename a section of Bompas Street to Ptarmigan Way.
In emails after this article was first published, Inuvik director of protective services Brian Larman said Bompas Street appears in two places – between Stringer Road and Centennial Street, but also entirely separately between Gwich’in Road and Mackenzie Road.
The proposal would leave the name in place between Gwich’in Road and Mackenzie Road while renaming the section between Stringer Road and Centennial Street.

The town invited residents to study background information available from the town office.
The municipality is also proposing to consolidate Carmichael Drive East and Carmichael Drive West into a single Carmichael Drive.
“While this has not impacted emergency services responses, it was recognized that there is the potential for confusion when seconds can matter,” Larman said of the proposals.
Written submissions are accepted until noon on Monday, August 10. You can submit comments online. The hearing itself takes place at town council chambers from 7pm that day.
In 2024, the town renamed a street on the grounds that its former name was associated with the residential school system.
Generally, where the name Bompas appears in the NWT, it is a reference to 19th-century northern bishop William Bompas or a relative. According to the Yukon government, Bompas co-founded the institution that became the territory’s first residential school.
