The Town of Inuvik is holding an August 10 public hearing to consider renaming Bompas Street and consolidating two Carmichael Drives into one.
The hearing is to gather feedback, the town said in a Monday notice.
In 2024, the town renamed a street on the grounds that its former name was associated with the residential school system.
The latest hearing considers a proposal to rename Bompas Street to Ptarmigan Way.
Generally, where the name Bompas appears in the NWT, it is a reference to 19th-century northern bishop William Bompas or a relative. According to the Yukon government, Bompas co-founded the institution that became the territory’s first residential school.

The town did not provide a formal rationale for the proposed change online, but invited residents to study background information available from the town office.
The municipality is also proposing to consolidate Carmichael Drive East and Carmichael Drive West into a single Carmichael Drive.
Written submissions are accepted until noon on Monday, August 10. You can submit comments online. The hearing itself takes place at town council chambers from 7pm that day.
