Yellowknife lost power at dawn on Friday as a thunderstorm moved across the city. The NWT Power Corporation said lightning struck a transmission line.
The citywide outage began shortly before 6:30am. By 8am, the power corporation said power had been restored to all customers in the area.

The blackout occurred amid lightning strikes as a storm moved slowly over Yellowknife heading north. Thunderstorms are also forecast in the vicinity of Hay River and Fort Smith later on Friday.
“We had a lightning strike hit the highline from Snare Hydro,” NTPC stated, explaining the morning outage. The Snare hydro system is one of two hydro facilities that power the city alongside diesel backup.
