The Beats Dance Society is hosting a $50,000 bingo fundraiser – its biggest to date – on Saturday, August 29 at the Yellowknife Community Arena.
The society supports participants in the city’s Bella Beats program, which has 84 dancers this year ranging in age from six to 18. Fundraising helps families cover the costs of competitions, conventions, travel and other dance opportunities.
Jocelyn Christensen, fundraising president for the Beats Dance Society, said travelling gives dancers opportunities they can’t always otherwise access in the North.
“There’s so many opportunities when we’re able to travel,” she said.
Dancers have travelled to competitions and conventions across Canada and have also had opportunities to work with professional choreographers outside the territory.

Christensen said the experience is also brought back home, allowing dancers to share the skills and techniques they learn with the local community.
The society regularly hosts smaller bingos, but this will be its largest fundraiser yet.
“We’re super excited,” Christensen said. “We’ve got some fun things in store for our bingo players.”
Doors open at 1pm and organizers are expecting about 650 people.

Christensen said the society is grateful for the support it receives from Yellowknife and communities across the North.
“The kids are well aware that this is how we’re able to make it happen for them,” she said.
