City economic manager Melissa Syer says she’s running for mayor of Yellowknife, becoming the second person to declare their candidacy so far.
Sitting councillor Garett Cochrane had earlier said he’s running for the mayor’s office.
On her campaign website, Syer said she had come to Yellowknife with the armed forces a decade ago and “fell in love” with the city.

A former naval warfare officer, Syer later became executive director of the Yellowknife Chamber of Commerce and then the city’s manager of economic opportunities.

“I’ve learned that good leadership isn’t about having the loudest voice in the room. It’s about listening, bringing good people together, making thoughtful decisions and getting things done,” she stated in a Friday announcement posted to a campaign website.
Describing a “generational turning point” ahead, Syer said the city should “be ambitious about what comes next.”
Her three-pronged platform focuses on responsive and effective government, active pursuit of economic opportunities, and making Yellowknife “safe, vibrant and welcoming.”
Yellowknife’s municipal election takes place on October 19. Incumbent mayor Ben Hendriksen has previously said he does not intend to run for the office again.
