A Saskatchewan 17-year-old on a Canada-wide arrest warrant faces charges after turning up in a vehicle outside Jean Marie River last month, RCMP say.

Jean Marie River is a small community of about 70 people in the NWT’s Dehcho region.

According to police, the youth – who cannot be identified under Canadian law because of their age – was found by officers patrolling Highway 1 near the Jean Marie River turnoff on August 14.

RCMP say “drug residue, weapons and ammunition” were found in the vehicle at the time, then a later search of a safe seized from the youth turned up more than $12,500 in cash and 144 grams of suspected cocaine.

Charges laid include possessing cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon and failure to comply with release and probation orders.
