Inuvik chooses to remember Cpl Jordan Anderson in road name

A Town of Inuvik map shows the location of a road to be named either Ethel Street or Leona Street
A Town of Inuvik map shows the location of a road the town is asking residents help name.

The results are in and a road at Inuvik Airport is set to receive a new name: Anderson Road, named for a former resident who passed away on active military service.

The road’s new name was the subject of a poll in which residents could write in with suggestions or cast their vote online. The name must still be approved by the town’s council

Anderson Road would be named for Cpl Jordan Anderson, who went to school in Inuvik before becoming a soldier. He was killed in Afghanistan in 2007.

Inuvik originally offered residents two name choices for the road, located at a military installation near the airport – Ethel Street or Leona Street, after the prominent female former MPs Ethel Blondin-Andrew and Leona Aglukkaq.

However, when residents voiced the need for more local options, the town expanded the list to include suggestions honouring the likes of lifelong residents, northern aviators, and people who helped build and run the airport.

Residents had until December 20 to vote on the updated list of potential road names.

In the end, Ethel Road and Leona Road garnered the fewest votes by far, getting just four and six votes respectively.

Anderson Road won with a total of 336 votes.
