The YWCA NWT has set a new date for its annual general meeting after it was hastily postponed late last month.

The delay happened the same week the organization’s executive director was removed from her role.

Hawa Dumbuya-Sesay had headed the charity since 2020. Her sudden departure left staff “beside themselves with grief,” former executive director Lyda Fuller previously told Cabin Radio.

She said wasn’t aware of any circumstances that would have led the organization’s board to end Dumbuya-Sesay’s employment, stating the YWCA “thrived under her leadership.”

At the time, president of the board Rami Kaur said she would not discuss personnel matters with the media.

The meeting has been rescheduled for October 24 at 11am in the auditorium of the Prince of Wales
Northern Heritage Centre, a Friday press release stated.

Anyone can attend the AGM, but only members are eligible to vote, the release said.

Members are required to pay an annual $10 fee.

The charity operates transitional and emergency housing and a family violence shelter in Yellowknife, as well as programs for families and youth. It employs more than 80 people.
