The North American Indigenous Games’ next edition will be hosted by Norway House Cree Nation and the Southern Chiefs’ Organization in and around Winnipeg two years from now, its organizing body says.

NAIG is normally held every four years. The last edition was in 2023, but Calgary lost the hosting rights to 2027’s event after the NAIG Council, which oversees the Games, said last year “critical benchmarks” had not been met.

The process of finding a new host meant a year-long delay. This week, the NAIG Council said Winnipeg and Manitoba will host the next edition from July 9-23, 2028.

More than 5,000 athletes are expected to attend. The NWT sends a team to each Games.

“The award follows a national bid process led by the NAIG Council and depends on completing several key milestones before a formal host agreement is signed,” the council stated.
