The Union of Northern Workers and Public Service Alliance of Canada plan to stage a rally outside the territorial legislature in Yellowknife on Wednesday.
The UNW is in the middle of its triennial convention, a gathering held once every three years at which delegates will elect a union president.
PSAC North says its members will join attendees in a march from convention venue the Chateau Nova Hotel across the street to the legislature.
The rally is “to demand a fair deal that respects the value of GNWT employees’ work,” PSAC North stated.
Collective bargaining between the NWT government and UNW will enter mediation in January after the territorial government declared impasse in August.
The latest collective agreement – outlining employment terms for thousands of GNWT staff – lapsed at the end of March. Its terms will remain in place until a new agreement is signed.
The march begins at 12pm on Wednesday.
