The NWT’s former health minister will be joining the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation as its associate executive director of health, wellness and beneficiary services.
The IRC announced in a Tuesday press release that Lesa Semmler will take on the role effective Monday, November 9.
The organization said Semmler brings “significant public service and an understanding of the needs and priorities of Inuvialuit and communities across the region.” It said the role will add senior leadership to health, wellness and beneficiary services and support the continued delivery and development of programs and services.
“One of my commitments was to create more opportunities for Inuvialuit in senior leadership. Lesa’s appointment supports that goal while strengthening mentorship, capacity building and succession planning within IRC,” said Erwin Elias, chair and chief executive officer of the IRC.
Semmler will work with and report to Evelyn Storr, the IRC’s executive director of health, wellness and beneficiary services.
Semmler, who is a registered nurse, announced she was stepping down as the NWT’s health minister and the MLA for Inuvik Twin Lakes in September. She said at the time that serving residents of the territory had “been one of the greatest privileges” of her life but that it was “time for a new chapter.”
Inuvik Boot Lake Denny Rodgers has since taken over the health and social services portfolio and Semmler’s spot on cabinet.
A by-election for a new Inuvik Twin Lakes MLA is set to take place on November 24. Three candidates are vying for the role: Sallie Ross, Mataya Gillis and Jake Jellema.
