NWT Speaker of the House Shane Thompson, the Nahendeh MLA, said on Wednesday he intends to retire from politics next year.
“I know I’m going to join you in retirement, and Bob, on October 29, 2027,” Thompson told former speaker Jackie Jacobson – standing next to former premier Bob McLeod – at an unveiling of a portrait of Jacobson on Wednesday.
The 2027 territorial election is scheduled for October 5 that year. October 29, 2027 is the last day of benefits for the speaker, ministers and MLAs according to a schedule published by the legislature.
“It’s official news there, just so everybody understands,” Thompson added, turning toward reporters.
First elected in 2015, Thompson will have completed three terms in office by that point. His first four years were as a regular MLA, followed by four as environment minister, then a term as speaker.
