The NWT’s health authority says it is sticking with a public administrator but will find a new candidate when Dan Florizone’s two-year term expires next month.
Then-health minister Lesa Semmler removed the leadership council that formerly oversaw the health authority’s governance in December 2024, installing Florizone as administrator in its place.
In a statement on Thursday, the health authority said it is keeping the public administrator model for the time being but Florizone’s appointment “will conclude as scheduled.”
Health deputy minister Alan Doody will be the interim administrator until a new one is found. The new administrator should be a “qualified Northwest Territories resident who understands the territory, its communities and the challenges facing the health and social services system,” the health authority asserted.
The territory said its reliance on a single public administrator at the top of the health authority “remains transitional while the GNWT considers longer-term governance arrangements.”
Florizone, formerly a healthcare leader in Saskatchewan and Nunavut, “took on this role at a challenging time and important work has advanced under his oversight,” new health minister Denny Rodgers was quoted as saying. Rodgers replaced Semmler last month after she resigned as an MLA.
“As the new minister,” Rodgers continued, “I want to build on that progress while setting a clear direction for what comes next.”
Florizone was not quoted in the news release.
The health authority said the administrator’s position will now have a “renewed focus on accountability, organizational performance and improving health and social services for residents.”
