Yellowknife resident Marie Douglas celebrated her birthday with a $21,000 scratch card win.
Douglas won the money on a ticket she had received as a birthday present from her niece, according to a news release from the Western Canada Lottery Corporation (WCLC) on Monday. The ticket came from Yellowknife’s Shoppers Drug Mart.
“I had a party for my birthday,” Douglas told WCLC. “My niece bought me a few tickets, so after the party I poured myself a drink and got scratching.
“I thought I won $21. I had to take a closer look – I was shocked. What an amazing gift!”
Douglas told WCLC a trip to Las Vegas may be on the cards after her birthday surprise.
The happy winner said she doesn’t have any plans for her winnings just yet, but she is thinking she might treat herself to a trip to Las Vegas.
WCLC routinely publishes the names of individual who win major prizes on its website. The corporation says this helps to preserve the integrity of its competitions, by demonstrating how prizes are won and by whom.
The corporation did not specify the date of Douglas’ win.
