Residents and businesses in Fort Liard now have access to faster internet and unlimited data plans as Northwestel has launched its fibre-to-the-home service in the community.

The company said in a Tuesday news release that the upgraded service includes download speeds of 250 mbps for residential customers, which is up to 16 times faster than what was previously available and equivalent to internet speeds in Yellowknife. High-speed unlimited internet is also available for businesses in Fort Liard.

Northwestel announced similar upgrades to internet service in Behchokǫ late last month.

Not every community in the NWT has access to unlimited or high-speed internet.

In June 2021, the company said it would be rolling out several hundred kilometres of fibre in the Yukon and NWT to set up fibre-to-the-home service for more than 2,600 homes. In the NWT, that included homes in Fort Providence, Fort Liard, Behchokǫ, Fort Simpson and Jean Marie River.

The construction is part of Northwestel’s three-year Every Community project to bring high speed internet to every community in the NWT and the Yukon.

Late last week, the company announced $10 monthly price reductions for unlimited internet plans as of January 27. It also upgraded all Internet 125 and Internet 250 monthly data packages to unlimited internet with no added costs.

In the NWT, unlimited plans are currently available in Behchokǫ, Fort Smith, Hay River, Inuvik, Norman Wells, and Yellowknife.
