The Town of Fort Smith has set up GoFundMe pages to raise money for the people affected by January’s plane crash outside the community.

A charter aircraft headed to the Diavik diamond mine crashed shortly after take-off from Fort Smith on the morning of January 23. Two Northwestern Air Lease crew members and four passengers on board were killed in the crash.

One survivor is recovering after being released from hospital.

“It has been over a week since the devastating plane crash near Fort Smith that took the lives of six individuals,” Mayor Fred Daniels said in a statement late last week.

“This has left our community with a deep sense of sadness and a long road ahead in coming to terms with the loss. We remain grateful for the outpouring of support.”

In the past two weeks, residents have gathered at the town’s recreation centre and held candlelit vigils in Fort Smith and Hay River as the communities attempt to support those involved.

As of Tuesday afternoon, $17,435 had been raised through a memorial fund to be distributed among the six victims’ families.

A separate survivor fund to assist with the recovery of Kurt Macdonald, who escaped the crash, had raised $9,188 at the time.
