Yellowknife’s new city manager has resigned after two weeks in the role.

In a brief statement, City Hall said the resignation was “for personal reasons” and his last day will be May 13, meaning he’ll go on complete just over a month in the role.

Collin formally took over from the outgoing Sheila Bassi-Kellett on April 9.

“This is unexpected but council would like to extend our best wishes to John,” Mayor Rebecca Alty was quoted as saying.

“Council is determining next steps to fill the city manager position given this unexpected news. We will update when further information is confirmed, and will appoint an interim city manager by May 13.”

The city said it “has no further information to provide at this time.”

Collin arrived in Yellowknife having previously served as the city manager of Saint John, New Brunswick for four years.

He is a 35-year veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces, achieving the rank of major-general.

The City of Yellowknife is heading into a critical period as it prepares for what could be a second consecutive severe wildfire season.

The city expects to receive an independent review of its 2023 fire and evacuation response from contractor KPMG in the next two months, which is likely to come with a series of actions for the municipality to take.

“The work of the city continues under the strong leadership of city staff,” City Hall stated.
