In preparation for the Snowbirds and SkyHawks performance over Yellowknife, Cabin Radio went to interview some of the pilots. They asked if we wanted to jump out of a plane.
Obviously, the answer was yes.
Cabin Radio intern Claire McFarlane decided to take the leap – and take our audience along on her journey. (She wanted to, we promise.)
The Snowbirds and SkyHawks show – the real one, with just the professionals and no Claire – takes place between noon and 1pm on Saturday, July 13. Claire joined a day of rehearsals on Friday to experience life with the parachute team.
For Saturday’s show, the place to be is Yellowknife’s Somba K’e Park.
The SkyHawks parachute jumpers will embark on their display at noon, landing in a cordoned-off section of the park.
At 12:45pm, the Snowbirds will perform a 15-minute non-aerobatic display over Frame Lake.
The best place to watch the show will be Somba K’e Park. You should also be able to see them from anywhere else that Yellowknifers can typically see the New Year’s Eve fireworks, such as Frame Lake and the Frame Lake trail, Niven Lake, and Pilots’ Monument.
At 1pm, the SkyHawks team will head to the park to sign autographs and speak with residents. The Snowbirds pilots will do the same from 2pm.
The performance will mark the first Snowbirds visit to the city since 2016 and celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Air Force.
