Wildlife officers killed a bear just off Yellowknife’s Con Road on Tuesday evening. It’s at least the second bear dispatched in the city in the past week.
Two gunshots were heard shortly after 9:15pm in the vicinity of Rycon Place. Wildlife officers at the scene confirmed to residents that a bear had been killed.
Sightings of bears in Yellowknife, particularly in the Con and School Draw neighbourhoods and along Tin Can Hill, have continued for days.
On August 7, a separate bear was killed by wildlife officers near the Rotary Park boardwalk after it had been judged a threat to public safety.
On Tuesday, the bear in the Con neighbourhood had reportedly been rifling through garbage before wildlife officers stepped in.
Last week, the NWT government said many of the bears being identified in urban areas this year “appear to be juveniles, which would be at the age where they are learning to fend for themselves.”
“As a result, they can be attracted into communities from their regular habitat in search food sources to meet seasonal demands,” the territorial government stated, urging residents to take precautions and “remember we live in bear country.”
