Former Whatì resident charged in child pornography case

A former resident of Whatì has been charged following a child pornography investigation, NWT police said on Wednesday.

Mario Laplante, 62, faces charges of possessing child pornography and making it available.

He has been released under strict conditions, RCMP said in a news release, and must reside at his present home in Ontario.

Police added Laplante is expected to appear in court on January 14, 2020.

Due to a publication ban, RCMP said they are not able to share any more details about the investigation.

Police said a new internet child exploitation unit conducted the investigation, involving two RCMP members looking into online crimes related to child abuse and exploitation.
